Argument to reverence. An authority has spoken, and the speaking is taken for proof; whether the authority bears on the claim is never asked. Deference stands in where reasons were owed.

The fallacy is associated with early modern treatments of appeals to modesty or reverence before authority, especially where deference replaces examination of reasons.

Locke discusses appeals to authority as a way of pressuring assent by invoking respected names rather than presenting proof, helping establish the later textbook category.

In modern informal logic, the analysis has become more careful: appeal to authority is not always fallacious, since expert testimony can be legitimate evidence under the right domain and reliability conditions.

Contemporary epistemology treats the fallacy as testimonial overreach: an authority claim is used beyond the scope in which it can rationally transfer warrant.
